There are many programs available on the web to help you change batches of filenames.

Some are free and some you have to purchase.

Some software such as Photoshop and Irfanview have built in file changing functions.

Most are very sophisticated. So sophisticated in fact that it can take some considerable time and a lot of trial and error to learn how to get them to do what you want. This is especially true if you're not an experienced computer user.

This is a simple little program which renames files in a directory to give a pattern like this

newname001.jpg
newname002.jpg
newname003.jpg

.....

newname010.jpg

.....

newname999.jpg
etc. etc

The new filename consists of three parts which you can control

e.g. newname003.jpg

The first part of the filename which appears in all new names (here we've used newname)

The second part of the filename which is a numerical value. You can start with any number you want and it increments in steps of 1. In our example we started with number 1. The program puts the 00 (zero, zero) in front of all numbers less than 10 and a puts a single zero before all numbers between 10 and 99 inclusive.

The third part of the filename (here we've used .jpg) - that's DOTjpg

Note changing the file suffix (the third part of the name) is not a good idea. It won't change the file but it will stop some programs (and you) recognising it.

More advanced users will recognise the use of wildcards in the search string and also that the third box could contain text before the .jpg suffix giving filenames such as newname003pic.jpg etc etc. which is why we didn't program in the dot as part of the filename !!
